Corsets
Corsets are most commonly and well-known for their ability to slim the body and shape it into a fashionable silhouette. This most commonly emphasizes a curvy figure in women by reducing the waist and thus exaggerating the bust and hips. However, corsets were worn at times to achieve a tubular straight-up-and-down shape, which involved minimizing the bust and hips.
An "overbust corset" encircles the torso from just under the arms to the hips. An "underbust corset" is a corset that starts just under the breasts and extends down to the hips. A "longline corset," which can be overbust or underbust, extends past the iliac crest or hip bone. A longline corset is ideal for those who want more stability, have longer torsos, or want to smooth out their silhouette.
A "standard" length corset will fall just short of the iliac crest and is ideal for those who prefer more flexibility or have a shorter torso. In very rare cases, corsets can reach the knees. A waist cincher is a shorter type of corset that covers the waist area (from the ribs to just above the hips). A corset may also include garters to keep stockings in place; alternatively, a separate garter belt may be worn.
Traditionally, a corset supports the visible dress and distributes the pressure from large dresses, such as the crinoline and bustle. A corset cover is sometimes used to protect outer clothing from the corset and to smooth the lines of the corset. The original corset cover was worn beneath the corset as a layer between it and the body. Corsets were not worn next to the skin, possibly due to difficulties with laundering these items in the nineteenth century, as they had steel boning and rusty metal eyelets. Furthermore, even in bodies/stays/corsets without metal components, many wearers find the feeling of a tight garment right against them to be uncomfortable, with sweatiness being the most common complaint. Light linen or cotton shifts (also known as chemises) were worn beneath corsets to absorb sweat and protect the corset and wearer from each other, as well as to function as underwear and protect other garments from the wearer and their sweat. The corset cover was typically a light chemisette made of cotton lawn or silk. Corset liners are used by modern corset wearers for many of the same reasons. Liners are used by those who lace their corsets tightly to prevent burns on their skin from the laces.
